Human Rights and Good Governance

NWASEA has conducted workshops on rape, defilement and early marriage in Bugiri and Mayuge Districts.

The results of the activity were that awareness was created and recommendations were shared with the law reform commission. And this contributed to the Decision to establish a desk for family support at every police station.

Functional Adult Literacy

We trained 300 FAL Instructors with 2551 learners.

We have also been able to produced/print 3000 FAL Instructional materials both in English and local language Lusoga; have been able to connect 216 women to micro-finance for viable projects; have provided functional Adult Literacy scholastic materials like blackboards, preparatory books to instructors, Chalk and also tree fruit seedlings to 2551 graduates.

Nutrition and Early Childhood Development

We trained 175 Child Care Workers who are to help child mothers in caring for their children through sensitization on nutritious foods and training on how to mix nutritious baby meals.

We have also facilitate 450 village action plans for two sub counties of Nawandala and Makuutu.

NWASEA distributed 90 bicycles to the Child Care Workers, 90 weighing scales and 90 height measuring gadgets.

Constructed a children's resource centre in Nawandala Sub county and conducted children's parish days which included immunization, de-worming, growth promotion, Monitoring and filling in child cards.

Empowering communities to participate in planning, implementation, monitoring and Evaluation.

In 2006 to 2008 we trained 800 community members (women and men) in local government planning and budgeting.

The project was implemented in the sub counties of Nabitende, Waibuga and Makuutu in Iganga District.

The project resulted in Empowered local communities, able to plan, implement and monitor development projects; Increased levels of community participation in planning, implementation and monitoring of development programmes; improved governance structures and service delivery among local leaders and Community Based groups; and enabled community, generating informed decisions on issues affecting them.

Women political empowerment

We implemented a number of projects geared towards empowerment of women politically, a case in point is women's participation in political transition project considering how women can best position themselves effectively to ensure gender equity in the political process and empowering them with tools and techniques to enable them participate effectively that resulted into increase in the number of women voters by 47% in the elections.

Women's Rights

NWASEA has conducted a number of workshops geared towards sensitizing communities on the device dangers of rape, defilement, child abuse, neglect and domestic violence against women in Iganga, Bugiri, Luuka and Namutumba.

The result is that awareness has been created and recommendations have been shared with the law reform commission, a desk for rape/defilement and domestic violence has been established at the various law enforcement institutions.

We have conducted seminars and workshops to promote a rights-based approach to development where NWASEA has empowered the marginalised women to hold government and it's agencies accountable for the delivery of basic services and advance their basic civil and political rights.

Advocacy and lobbying for enhancement of the girls child education and lowering the rate of drop out of schools.

A number of surveillance pressure groups in the community to oversee the practice have been established.

Women land Rights

Skills were imparted and participants learnt how to analyze the land laws and the land policy Participants have been able to discuss freely on the land policy issues relating them to their specific situations in their villages.

A total of 100 community members and 40 paralegals/human rights monitors have been trained to sensitize communities on women and girl child land ownerships, Will making, land dispute settlement, encouraging community members to obtain certificates on their land.

By the end of this year, a total of 790 community members had been sensitized, 32 had submitted lease application forms to the respective district land boards, 123 land cases had been reported to LC land courts, 4 widows have restored their land.

A total of 117 phone-in have been registered and their key equerries were answered; 4 men/youth and 20 women visited the secretariat to ask for advice regarding their land issues.

Care for HIV/AIDS Orphans

Conducted training and sensitization seminars to Orphaned Children Care givers to give support and care to them to access Education and Health packages. These trainings were conducted in the Buwunga sub county of Bugiri District.

The trainings were also followed with a follow-up exercise which indicated at total of 490 orphans under the age of 7 in only 100 homes in the sub county. In turn, a total of 200 orphans were given beddings and scholastic materials by NWASEA. This was done to give an example to other stakeholders and sympathers to help orphans and vulnerable children

Research and Documentation

We successfully Undertaken research work supported by network of Uganda Researchers and Research Users. The research entitled the extent of policy implementation on the girl child Education. This was carried out in Iganga district and a total of 100 booklets were produced and disseminated to the community and other policy implementing institutions like police, the magistrate courts, education officers and head teachers of various schools.

Another research was carried out to determine the level of community engagement in development planning and relationship between local government and CSOs in service delivery. This helped to identify the planning, Implementation, monitoring and Evaluation gaps that do exist in the local governance structure.
